Important documents

As you get closer to adulthood, knowing about and keeping important documents safe is a life skill.  These papers

 protect your identity, prove who you are, and are 

needed for big moments like:

  • Getting a Job
  • Renting a Place
  • Applying for College
  • Opening a Bank Account


Why Documents are Important

Being Organized with Your Documents isn't boring- it's being Prepared


Imagine this-

You just landed your dream internship!  

Orientation starts Monday, and HR emails you asking for your Social Security number by the end of the day

  

You don't have it memorized

Your card is in your parents' house.... in another state  

And they're on vacation

Now you're stressed, emailing back and forth- hoping they will give you more time


All of that could have been avoided by being prepared and having a secure copy ready

Keeping Documents Safe

Important Documents Should be Treated like valuables- because they are


  • Get a fireproof and waterproof safe
  • Make a copy of all important documents or take a picture 
  • Write numbers like your driver's license and social in your phone notes 
  • Don't leave documents in your car or room unsecured
  • If you want to keep them at your parent's house, make sure you keep copies in a secure location 

Which Documents are Important

Review your Documents twice a year to make sure everything is up to date:


  • Passport
  • Drivers License
  • Social Security Card
  • Health Insurance Card
  • Car Insurance
  • High School Diploma
  • Medical Records
  • Prescription Information
  • Bank Account Information
  • Car Registration
  • Lease Agreement


You might not have all of these- but knowing what they are and where they are stored is part of becoming independent


Phone Numbers, Too

Write down important phone numbers and keep them with your other documents:


  • Family Contacts
  • Doctor
  • Insurance Company
  • Work Number
  • Close Friend
  • Bank
  • Roadside Assistance
  • Non-emergency police
